EMG – EEG (Clinical Neurophysiology) · New City Clinic

Evoked Potentials (VEP, BAEP, SEP)

Tests that measure conduction along the visual, hearing and sensory pathways; important in MS and optic neuritis.

At New City Clinic, Evoked Potentials is performed in Istanbul by specialist physicians at partner hospitals licensed by the Turkish Ministry of Health.

Evoked Potentials in Istanbul – New City Clinic

Evoked Potentials in Istanbul: overview

Evoked potential tests measure the brain’s electrical response to harmless stimuli given to the eyes, ears or nerves in the arms and legs. Visual evoked potentials (VEP) assess the visual pathway, brainstem auditory evoked responses (BAEP) the hearing pathway, and somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) the sensory pathways. In multiple sclerosis (MS), optic neuritis and some other nervous system conditions, they add information to MRI findings. The tests are painless and done as an outpatient.

Who is it for?

Evoked potentials suit people being assessed for multiple sclerosis, optic neuritis or unexplained visual, hearing or sensory symptoms, together with an MRI.

Mervenur C. Ç.Electroneurophysiology TechnicianPerforms EMG, nerve conduction studies, routine and sleep-deprived EEG, video-EEG and evoked potential recordings. She prepares patients for the test, places the electrodes according to international standards and ensures clean, artefact-free recordings. The recordings are reviewed and reported by the neurologist.

Types of evoked potential test

Depending on the question, one or more tests are performed:

  • VEP: you look at a changing pattern on a screen
  • BAEP: clicks are played through headphones
  • SEP: small pulses are given to nerves at the wrist or ankle

Your journey in Türkiye, step by step

  1. 01

Send your reports, MRI and previous test results; a neurologist makes a preliminary assessment.

  2. 02

You are told in writing which examinations and tests are needed, how many days to stay and the quote.

  3. 03

Welcome and accommodation in Istanbul; consultations and tests are booked in advance, without waiting lists.

  4. 04

Test results are reported by the neurologist on the same day or within a few days and explained to you.

  5. 05

Recovery

Most consultations and tests are outpatient, so you can return to daily life the same day. A sleep study and long video-EEG recordings involve a night in hospital.

What you should know

  • Most tests are painless; needle EMG can cause brief mild discomfort
  • You may feel tired after a sleep-deprived EEG; do not drive that day
  • In an emergency such as sudden weakness, slurred speech or a seizure, go to your nearest emergency department

Every medical procedure carries risk. Your physician will explain the risks specific to you during your examination.

Frequently asked questions

What is evoked potentials?

Evoked potential tests measure the brain’s electrical response to harmless stimuli given to the eyes, ears or nerves in the arms and legs. Visual evoked potentials (VEP) assess the visual pathway, brainstem auditory evoked responses (BAEP) the hearing pathway, and somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) the sensory pathways. In multiple sclerosis (MS), optic neuritis and some other nervous system conditions, they add information to MRI findings. The tests are painless and done as an outpatient.

How many days do I need for the consultation and tests?

Most consultations and tests are completed in 1–3 days. A sleep study takes one night, and video-EEG can take several hours or a few days; the exact length is given to you in writing.

How should I prepare for the tests?

For an EEG, your hair should be clean and free of oil; before an EMG, do not apply cream to your arms and legs. Do not stop your medicines – bring a list with you. Any special preparation is sent to you in writing beforehand.

Who reviews the results?

Recordings are made by an electroneurophysiology technician; they are reviewed and reported by a neurologist.

How is the price determined?

It depends on the consultations and tests needed. After your reports have been reviewed, you receive a free, itemised written quote.

Do I need to prepare?

Bring your glasses for VEP and wash your hair; no other preparation is usually needed.

How long does it take?

Usually 30–60 minutes, depending on how many tests are done.
