Parkinson’s Disease in Istanbul – New City Clinic

Parkinson’s Disease in Istanbul: overview

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive condition with tremor at rest, slowness of movement, muscle stiffness and balance problems. The diagnosis is made mainly by neurological examination; a brain MRI and, in selected patients, additional imaging help to rule out conditions that cause similar symptoms. The treatment plan is tailored to the severity of symptoms and your lifestyle, and physiotherapy and an exercise programme are important parts of it. In advanced stages, selected patients whose symptoms are not well controlled are assessed together with neurosurgery for options such as deep brain stimulation.

Who is it for?

A Parkinson’s assessment suits people with tremor, slowness, stiffness, small handwriting, a soft voice or balance problems, and people with Parkinson’s whose treatment needs reviewing.

What you should know

  • Most tests are painless; needle EMG can cause brief mild discomfort
  • You may feel tired after a sleep-deprived EEG; do not drive that day
  • In an emergency such as sudden weakness, slurred speech or a seizure, go to your nearest emergency department

Every medical procedure carries risk. Your physician will explain the risks specific to you during your examination.

Frequently asked questions

What is parkinson’s disease?

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive condition with tremor at rest, slowness of movement, muscle stiffness and balance problems. The diagnosis is made mainly by neurological examination; a brain MRI and, in selected patients, additional imaging help to rule out conditions that cause similar symptoms. The treatment plan is tailored to the severity of symptoms and your lifestyle, and physiotherapy and an exercise programme are important parts of it. In advanced stages, selected patients whose symptoms are not well controlled are assessed together with neurosurgery for options such as deep brain stimulation.

How many days do I need for the consultation and tests?

Most consultations and tests are completed in 1–3 days. A sleep study takes one night, and video-EEG can take several hours or a few days; the exact length is given to you in writing.

How should I prepare for the tests?

For an EEG, your hair should be clean and free of oil; before an EMG, do not apply cream to your arms and legs. Do not stop your medicines – bring a list with you. Any special preparation is sent to you in writing beforehand.

Who reviews the results?

Recordings are made by an electroneurophysiology technician; they are reviewed and reported by a neurologist.

How is the price determined?

It depends on the consultations and tests needed. After your reports have been reviewed, you receive a free, itemised written quote.

Is it Parkinson’s or something else?

Several conditions cause similar symptoms; the neurologist distinguishes them by examination and, when needed, imaging.

Is deep brain stimulation possible?

It is considered for selected patients; the neurologist assesses suitability and refers to the neurosurgery team.
