Sleep Apnoea and Sleep Disorders in Istanbul: overview
Obstructive sleep apnoea is the repeated narrowing or closing of the upper airway during sleep, which stops or reduces breathing. Loud snoring, breathing pauses noticed by a partner, waking up tired, daytime sleepiness and morning headaches are typical signs; left untreated it can raise the risk of high blood pressure, heart problems and road accidents. The diagnosis is made with polysomnography, an overnight study in a sleep laboratory. Depending on severity, treatment includes a CPAP device, weight loss, positional measures or an oral appliance. Other sleep disorders such as insomnia and restless legs syndrome are assessed as well.
Who is it for?
A sleep assessment suits people who snore loudly, stop breathing during sleep, wake up tired, fall asleep during the day, have morning headaches or high blood pressure that is hard to control, and people with insomnia or restless legs.

Polysomnography is an overnight recording in a private room of the sleep laboratory. While you sleep, the following are recorded painlessly:
- Brain waves (EEG), eye movements and muscle tone, to stage sleep
- Breathing airflow, chest and abdominal movement and snoring
- Blood oxygen level and heart rhythm
- Leg movements and body position

How many days do I need for the consultation and tests?
Most consultations and tests are completed in 1–3 days. A sleep study takes one night, and video-EEG can take several hours or a few days; the exact length is given to you in writing.
How should I prepare for the tests?
For an EEG, your hair should be clean and free of oil; before an EMG, do not apply cream to your arms and legs. Do not stop your medicines – bring a list with you. Any special preparation is sent to you in writing beforehand.
Who reviews the results?
Recordings are made by an electroneurophysiology technician; they are reviewed and reported by a neurologist.
How is the price determined?
It depends on the consultations and tests needed. After your reports have been reviewed, you receive a free, itemised written quote.
How many days do I need?
Usually 2–3 days: a consultation, one night for the study and the explanation of the results and treatment plan.
Will I need a CPAP device?
Only if the study shows moderate or severe apnoea or symptoms justify it; mild cases may be managed with weight loss, positional measures or an oral appliance.
