After vaginal births and with age, the muscles and tissues of the vagina can loosen, which some women experience as a feeling of width, reduced sensation during intercourse, air escaping from the vagina and lower self-confidence. In vaginal rejuvenation surgery (vaginoplasty) the loose tissue and muscles of the back wall of the vagina are repaired to tighten it, and the vaginal opening and changes from a birth tear or episiotomy are corrected with perineoplasty. Labiaplasty can be done in the same session if wished. The operation takes about 1–1.5 hours under general or regional anaesthesia, dissolvable stitches are used and most patients go home the same day or after one night. Intercourse, tampons, swimming and cycling are avoided for 6 weeks; the stay in Turkey is usually 5–7 days. For mild laxity, pelvic floor exercises come first. Evidence for non-surgical treatments such as laser and radiofrequency is limited, and health authorities have issued warnings about these devices; these options are explained with realistic expectations.
