Vertigo and Dizziness in Istanbul – New City Clinic

Vertigo and Dizziness in Istanbul: overview

Dizziness can come from the inner ear, the brain, blood pressure, the heart or medicines. The most common cause, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), is a brief spinning sensation triggered by head movements and often settles with simple repositioning manoeuvres performed during the examination. Vestibular neuritis, Ménière’s disease and vestibular migraine are also assessed. Sudden dizziness with slurred speech, weakness or double vision needs emergency assessment for stroke; where needed, an MRI and an ear, nose and throat assessment are planned.

Who is it for?

A dizziness assessment suits people with spinning sensations, unsteadiness, light-headedness or dizziness triggered by head movements.

What you should know

  • Most tests are painless; needle EMG can cause brief mild discomfort
  • You may feel tired after a sleep-deprived EEG; do not drive that day
  • In an emergency such as sudden weakness, slurred speech or a seizure, go to your nearest emergency department

Every medical procedure carries risk. Your physician will explain the risks specific to you during your examination.

Frequently asked questions

What is vertigo and dizziness?

Dizziness can come from the inner ear, the brain, blood pressure, the heart or medicines. The most common cause, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), is a brief spinning sensation triggered by head movements and often settles with simple repositioning manoeuvres performed during the examination. Vestibular neuritis, Ménière’s disease and vestibular migraine are also assessed. Sudden dizziness with slurred speech, weakness or double vision needs emergency assessment for stroke; where needed, an MRI and an ear, nose and throat assessment are planned.

How many days do I need for the consultation and tests?

Most consultations and tests are completed in 1–3 days. A sleep study takes one night, and video-EEG can take several hours or a few days; the exact length is given to you in writing.

How should I prepare for the tests?

For an EEG, your hair should be clean and free of oil; before an EMG, do not apply cream to your arms and legs. Do not stop your medicines – bring a list with you. Any special preparation is sent to you in writing beforehand.

Who reviews the results?

Recordings are made by an electroneurophysiology technician; they are reviewed and reported by a neurologist.

How is the price determined?

It depends on the consultations and tests needed. After your reports have been reviewed, you receive a free, itemised written quote.

Can BPPV be treated on the same day?

Often yes: repositioning manoeuvres in the clinic can relieve it quickly, and you are taught exercises for home.

When is an MRI needed?

When the examination suggests a cause in the brain or the symptoms are unusual.
