Epilepsy and EEG in Istanbul – New City Clinic

Epilepsy and EEG in Istanbul: overview

Epilepsy is a condition with recurrent seizures caused by abnormal electrical discharges in the brain. A neurological assessment is important after a first seizure or when seizures continue despite treatment. An EEG records the brain’s electrical activity; where needed, a sleep-deprived EEG or prolonged video-EEG monitoring is performed, and a brain MRI looks for structural causes. A treatment plan is made according to the diagnosis, with regular follow-up. Conditions that can look like seizures, such as fainting, heart rhythm problems or functional attacks, are also distinguished in this process.

Who is it for?

Epilepsy assessment suits people after a first seizure, people whose seizures continue despite treatment, and anyone who wants a second opinion on the diagnosis or treatment.

How many days do I need for the consultation and tests?

Most consultations and tests are completed in 1–3 days. A sleep study takes one night, and video-EEG can take several hours or a few days; the exact length is given to you in writing.

How should I prepare for the tests?

For an EEG, your hair should be clean and free of oil; before an EMG, do not apply cream to your arms and legs. Do not stop your medicines – bring a list with you. Any special preparation is sent to you in writing beforehand.

Who reviews the results?

Recordings are made by an electroneurophysiology technician; they are reviewed and reported by a neurologist.

How is the price determined?

It depends on the consultations and tests needed. After your reports have been reviewed, you receive a free, itemised written quote.

Can I fly after a seizure?

Most people can fly; discuss timing with your doctor and travel with a companion if your seizures are not controlled.

Can I drive?

Driving rules after seizures differ by country; follow the rules where you live.
