Scar Revision Surgery

Scar revision improves scars left by work or road accidents, burns, cuts or earlier surgery — scars that are wide, raised, sunken, discoloured or that limit movement. A scar cannot be erased completely, but it can be made thinner, flatter and better aligned with the natural lines of the skin. Depending on the scar, the surgeon removes it and closes the skin in fine layers, changes its direction with a Z-plasty or W-plasty, fills depressed scars with your own fat, uses skin grafts, flaps or tissue expansion for large burn scars, and releases tight scars (contractures) around joints. Laser, steroid injections and silicone therapy can complete the treatment. Most scars are left to mature for 6–12 months after the injury before revision. The procedure takes about 0.5–2 hours. Anaesthesia: local anaesthesia.
