Many couples consider IVF in Turkey. Before anything else it is important to know the Turkish rules, because they decide who can be treated. This guide explains the rules, each step of a cycle and how the stay in Istanbul is planned.
The rules in Turkey
IVF is available only to married couples using their own eggs and sperm; a marriage certificate is required. Egg, sperm or embryo donation and surrogacy are not permitted, and sex selection is allowed only for medical reasons.
How a cycle works
The ovaries are stimulated with injections for about 10–12 days, followed with ultrasound and blood tests. The eggs are collected under brief sedation and fertilised with the partner’s sperm by microinjection (ICSI). Embryos are grown for 3–5 days and a suitable one is transferred, fresh or after freezing.
Genetic testing (PGT)
Where there is a known genetic condition in the family or repeated miscarriage, embryos can be tested before transfer.
Your stay
Stimulation can start at home and be completed in Istanbul; one cycle usually means 10–14 days in Istanbul. The pregnancy test follows about 10–12 days after transfer and can be done at home.
Success and price
The chance of success depends mostly on the woman’s age and ovarian reserve, and the doctor explains it openly after your tests; no result can be guaranteed. The price is given in a written quote after the assessment; flights are not included.
