How is BMI calculated?
BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by the square of your height in metres. For example, 100 kg at 1.70 m gives 100 ÷ (1.70 × 1.70) = 34.6.
Is BMI alone enough to decide?
No. The surgeon also looks at your age, related diseases such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnoea or reflux, previous attempts to lose weight, eating habits and blood tests. BMI does not separate muscle from fat, and being ready for lifelong follow-up matters as much as the number.
Which procedure fits which situation?
A gastric balloon is endoscopic and temporary (6 or 12 months). A gastric sleeve removes about three quarters of the stomach. A gastric bypass also bypasses part of the small intestine and is often considered with type 2 diabetes or severe reflux. Revision surgery is for patients who regained weight or have problems after an earlier operation.

Under the ASMBS/IFSO 2022 guideline, from 35, or from 30 when type 2 diabetes or another metabolic disease is not controlled. The final decision is the surgeon’s after your tests.
What BMI do you need for a gastric balloon?+
Usually from about 27 to 30, depending on the balloon type and your health. The doctor decides after an assessment.
Can I have surgery with a BMI under 35?+
It can be considered from a BMI of 30 when there is type 2 diabetes or another metabolic disease that is not controlled with other treatment. Below 30, a gastric balloon or non-surgical treatment is usually discussed instead.
