Hair Transplant in Turkey from the USA and Canada: Planning the Trip, the Grafts and the Result
For patients from North America, a hair transplant in Istanbul is a short stay at the end of a long journey, so the planning matters. New City Clinic is a health-tourism organisation authorised by the Turkish Ministry of Health: we arrange your hair transplant at licensed partner facilities, where their doctors and trained teams perform it, with a written quote, hotel, transfers, an interpreter and complication insurance, and we stay in touch while your hair grows back home.
Why North American patients consider Istanbul
Patients tell us they want a clear plan before they fly: a date that fits their work, a written price, and the procedure, hotel and transfers organised as one package. There are direct and connecting flights to Istanbul from major cities in the United States and Canada; check schedules with the airlines. New City Clinic is registered with HealthTürkiye and organises and coordinates your treatment; it does not perform procedures itself. Compare more than the price: ask who plans and performs your transplant and how your donor area will be protected.
Who is a candidate?
A transplant suits men and women with stabilised hair loss, most often male-pattern baldness, and enough healthy hair at the back and sides of the head. If you are young and your hair loss is moving quickly, the doctor may suggest waiting or stabilising it first, so the hairline still looks natural in later years. A transplant does not stop the loss of your existing hair; medication to slow it may be recommended by a doctor. Scarring alopecia, some scalp conditions and a weak donor area can rule a transplant out. The doctor decides after reviewing your photos and examining you.
FUE and DHI for the scalp, beard and eyebrows
In FUE, follicles are extracted one by one from the donor area and implanted into small channels; in sapphire FUE the channels are opened with sapphire blades. In DHI, a pen-like implanter places each graft without opening channels first, which can suit dense work on the hairline and, in some cases, an unshaven procedure. For a beard or moustache, grafts are usually taken from the back of the scalp; for eyebrows, fine single hairs are placed at a precise angle, and they grow like scalp hair, so they need trimming. Women with a clear thinning area and a good donor area can also be candidates once the cause of the thinning has been looked into.
How graft numbers work
A graft is a natural unit of usually one to four hairs, so graft numbers and hair counts are different things. Your number depends on the area to cover, the density you want and the capacity of your donor area, which does not regrow what is removed. Over-harvesting can leave the back of the head visibly thin, and it uses up grafts you may need if your hair loss continues. Rather than asking for the biggest number, ask how your number was calculated and what is kept in reserve.
Graft factories: ask who does the work
Wherever you have a hair transplant, ask before you book, and ask for the answers in writing: the name of the doctor responsible; who designs the hairline; who extracts the grafts; who opens the channels and who implants the grafts; which steps the doctor performs personally and which are done by trained staff under the doctor’s supervision; and how many procedures the team performs that day. Be cautious with offers that cannot name the doctor or the facility, promise guaranteed results or push you to decide quickly.
Your days in Istanbul and the flight home
The usual stay is 3–4 days. After arrival and a night at the hotel, you have your consultation, hairline design, blood tests and the procedure under local anaesthetic, which usually takes 6–8 hours with breaks; you sleep at the hotel, not in hospital. Before you leave, the grafted area is checked, the first wash is done at the clinic and you learn the washing routine. With a long flight, plan to stay the full period, avoid knocking the grafted area, sleep semi-upright with a travel pillow, walk and drink water on the plane, and wear a loose hat only if the doctor allows it. Check the visa or e-visa requirements for your passport on the official website evisa.gov.tr before you book. Once your treatment is planned, the clinic confirms your appointment in writing.
Estimated 2026 price and what is included
The hair transplant package is estimated at €1,500, quoted in euros, not dollars. It includes the procedure at a licensed partner facility, pre-procedure blood tests, hotel accommodation, airport–hotel–clinic transfers, an interpreter and coordination as specified, and the first wash and check before you fly. Complication insurance is included in every package organised by New City Clinic; it is not an add-on. Its scope, limits and exclusions are given to you in writing with your quote and before the procedure. The final quote is given in writing after the doctor reviews your photos. Flights are not included. US and Canadian health insurers usually do not cover elective procedures abroad; ask your insurer before you travel.
Aftercare, shock loss and the 12–18-month timeline
Follow the washing instructions exactly, gently and without rubbing, and sleep with your head slightly raised for the first nights. Scabs usually fall away in about ten days, and desk work is usually possible after about three days. Wait about four weeks, or until the doctor allows it, for sport, swimming, saunas and heavy sweating, and keep your scalp out of strong sun. The transplanted hairs usually shed in the first weeks (shock loss), and nearby existing hair may thin for a while. New growth usually begins at around three to four months; much of the result is seen at about 12 months, and density, especially at the crown, can keep improving up to 18 months.
Follow-up from home and how to start
Once you are back in North America, the team follows your progress through photos at the key stages, and your coordinator is reachable on WhatsApp. Tell your primary care physician about your plans if you take regular medication or have a medical condition. To start, send photos of your head on WhatsApp: front, top, crown, both sides and the back, in good light with dry hair, together with your medical history and medication. A doctor reviews them free of charge and you usually receive a written quote within 24 hours.
