A BBL takes fat by liposuction from areas such as the waist, flanks, back or abdomen, purifies it and places it in the buttocks. The waist becomes slimmer and the buttocks fuller, using your own fat rather than an implant. It is performed under general anaesthesia in a hospital and usually takes two to four hours. When the liposuction covers the whole midsection, it is planned as Lipo 360 with BBL.
Safety first: what to ask before you book
The most serious risk of a BBL is fat entering the large veins of the buttock. Current surgical guidance is that fat is placed only in the layer under the skin, above the muscle, and that the volume is limited by the surgeon. Ask who the surgeon is and whether they are a plastic surgery specialist, which licensed hospital you will be in, whether an anaesthetist is present and whether you stay at least one night in hospital. A clinic that promises an extreme size in one session, or operates outside a hospital, is a warning sign.
How much fat you have decides the result
The amount of fat that can be moved depends on how much you have and where it is. Very slim patients may not have enough for a large change, and some of the transferred fat is always reabsorbed in the first months. The surgeon reviews your photos and tells you in writing what is realistic; if a second session is ever considered, it is planned months later, not in the same operation.
Darker skin, scars and keloids
A BBL leaves only small entry points for the liposuction cannula, but on darker skin these points can stay darker for a while, and some people form raised or keloid scars. Tell the surgeon if you or your family have keloids. The entry points are then placed where they are easiest to hide, and you receive aftercare advice for your skin, such as sun protection and scar care once the wounds have closed.
Health checks before travelling
Send your weight and height, any long-term conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes, and the medicines you take. Tell us if you have sickle cell disease or trait or any other blood disorder, or a history of blood clots, because the pre-operative tests and the anaesthetic plan take this into account. Smoking slows healing, so stop well before the operation.
How long to stay in Istanbul
Plan six to eight days. You normally spend one night in hospital, then rest at the hotel with check-ups and a final examination before the surgeon clears you to fly. A companion can stay with you and helps a great deal in the first days, when moving and dressing take time.
The flight home
Sitting for a long time is the main challenge after a BBL, so plan the journey carefully. Use your BBL cushion so that your weight rests on your thighs, wear compression stockings and your garment, drink water, and get up and walk in the aisle regularly. If your route has a connection, choose one that gives you time to walk. Your surgeon tells you the earliest safe day to fly.
