Fibroid Removal in Istanbul, Turkey: Keeping the Womb (Myomectomy) | New City Clinic

Fibroids are very common among women in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda and across the continent, and many women are told at home that removing the womb is the only answer. For women who want to keep the womb – often because they still hope to have children – a myomectomy removes the fibroids and leaves the womb in place. This New City Clinic guide explains how the operation is planned from Africa, what to send before travelling and what to expect in Istanbul.

Fibroids and Endometriosis Surgery in Istanbul, Turkey: price, package and planning

What fibroids are and why they matter

Fibroids are benign growths of the womb muscle. They can cause heavy and long periods, anaemia, pelvic pain or a swollen abdomen, pressure on the bladder and, in some cases, difficulty conceiving or repeated miscarriage. Some fibroids cause no symptoms and only need monitoring; whether surgery is needed depends on your symptoms, the size and position of the fibroids and your plans for pregnancy.

Myomectomy: removing the fibroids, keeping the womb

Fibroids inside the womb cavity can be removed through the cervix without any incision (hysteroscopic myomectomy). Fibroids in the wall of the womb are removed through small incisions while the womb is kept (laparoscopic or robotic myomectomy). When the fibroids are very many or very large, the gynaecologist explains which approach is suitable for you. Removing the whole womb (hysterectomy) is a separate operation, considered only when you do not wish to keep it and after the options have been discussed.

The scans and tests to send first

Send a recent pelvic ultrasound report and, if you have one, a pelvic MRI with the images themselves, because the number, size and position of the fibroids decide the plan. Add a recent full blood count, your blood group, a short description of your periods and symptoms, any previous operations and your medicines. Documents in English are reviewed directly.

Anaemia: an important step before travelling

Heavy bleeding over months or years often leads to anaemia. A low blood count makes surgery and the journey harder, so the gynaecologist may recommend treating it before you travel, with your doctor at home. Tell us also if you have sickle cell disease or trait or another blood disorder, so the pre-operative plan takes it into account.

The operation and hospital stay in Istanbul

After examination, ultrasound and blood tests, the operation is done under general anaesthesia and usually takes one to three hours. The hospital stay is usually one to two nights. Keyhole surgery leaves small scars, and you are walking again on the same or the next day.

How long to stay

Plan five to seven days in Istanbul: the pre-operative assessment, the operation, one or two nights in hospital and a check-up before you fly. A companion can stay with you. On the flight home, wear compression stockings if advised, drink water and walk regularly.

Pregnancy after a myomectomy

Many women can try for a pregnancy after a myomectomy. The surgeon tells you how long to wait before trying, which depends on how deep the fibroids were in the womb wall, and whether a caesarean section will be advised for a future birth. If you also plan IVF, fibroids that distort the womb cavity are usually dealt with first.

Can fibroids come back?

New fibroids can grow after a myomectomy, especially in younger women, because the operation removes the existing fibroids, not the tendency to form them. Regular ultrasound follow-up at home helps detect changes early.

Price and quote

Fibroid surgery has no listed package price, because the plan depends on your scans. After the gynaecologist has reviewed them, you receive a written quote covering the operation, hospital stay, hotel and transfers; flights are not included.

Frequently asked questions

Can my fibroids be removed without removing my womb?

In many cases yes, by hysteroscopic or laparoscopic (keyhole) myomectomy. The gynaecologist decides the approach after reviewing your scans.

I was told I need a hysterectomy. Can I get another opinion?

Yes. Send your ultrasound or MRI and reports; a gynaecologist reviews them and tells you in writing whether keeping the womb is an option for you.

How long will I stay in Istanbul?

Usually five to seven days, with one to two nights in hospital.

My blood count is low. Can I still travel?

Anaemia is common with fibroids. The gynaecologist may advise treating it at home first; send a recent full blood count so this can be assessed.

When can I try for a baby after the operation?

The surgeon tells you how long to wait, depending on the depth of the fibroids removed.

Can fibroids return?

New fibroids can grow over time. Regular ultrasound check-ups at home help detect them early.

Is the price fixed in advance?

No. The written quote follows the review of your scans; flights are not included.
