The scan decides
A low-dose CT scan without contrast shows the size, position and hardness of the stone. You can send a recent scan before travelling.
Three main methods
Shock-wave lithotripsy from outside the body (ESWL); a thin flexible endoscope passed up into the kidney to turn the stone into dust with a laser (RIRS); and, for large stones, removal through a tract of about 1 cm in the side (PCNL).
The JJ stent
A thin tube may be left in the ureter for a short time and removed a few weeks later in a simple procedure. We plan whether this is done in Istanbul or with a urologist at home.

Stone analysis and blood and urine tests guide diet and fluid advice to lower the risk of new stones.
