Kidney Cancer Treatment in Istanbul
Kidney cancer is often found by chance on a scan done for another reason. For small tumours found early, operations that preserve the kidney come first. New City Clinic coordinates assessment and treatment with the urology and oncology teams of its partner hospitals in Istanbul.
Assessment and diagnosis
Before a treatment plan is made, the type and stage of the disease are established. This usually involves:
- Contrast CT or MRI of the abdomen
- Chest CT for spread
- Kidney function tests
- Biopsy in selected patients
Treatment approaches
For small tumours, a partial nephrectomy removes only the tumour and preserves the rest of the kidney in suitable patients, and can be done robotically or laparoscopically. For very small tumours, close monitoring or ablation (freezing or heat) may be options. Large tumours are treated by removing the whole kidney (radical nephrectomy). For cancer that has spread, targeted drugs and immunotherapy are used.
- Robotic or laparoscopic partial nephrectomy
- Radical nephrectomy
- Monitoring or ablation for selected small tumours
- Targeted therapy and immunotherapy in advanced disease
The tumour board decides which methods are used and in what order. The treatment plan is determined after a physician’s examination and assessment of your tests.

Frequently asked questions
Can I live with one kidney?
Yes, if the other kidney is healthy, and daily life is usually not affected. Even so, partial nephrectomy is preferred in suitable patients to protect kidney function.
When can I fly after surgery?
After keyhole surgery usually within 1–2 weeks; your surgeon confirms the timing after the check-up.
Which documents should I send?
The pathology report, CT/MRI/PET-CT reports and, if possible, the images themselves, operation and discharge reports, blood tests and your medication list.
Can you give any assurance about the outcome?
No. No institution can guarantee the result of cancer treatment. Your physician will explain expectations and risks for your situation openly.
How is the cost determined?
It depends on the tests required and on the type and length of treatment. An itemised written quote follows the physician’s assessment.
