Ovarian Cancer Treatment in Istanbul
Ovarian cancer often shows itself with vague symptoms such as bloating, feeling full, loss of appetite and frequent urination, and is often found at an advanced stage. It is important that surgery is done by an experienced gynaecological oncology team. New City Clinic coordinates assessment and treatment with the oncology, breast surgery and gynaecological oncology teams of its partner hospitals in Istanbul.
Assessment and diagnosis
Before a treatment plan is made, the type and stage of the disease are established. This usually involves:
- Transvaginal ultrasound and pelvic MRI
- CT of abdomen and chest for spread
- Tumour markers (CA-125 and others where needed)
- Genetic testing (BRCA and other genes) and pathology
Treatment approaches
The main treatment combines extensive surgery aiming to remove all visible tumour in the abdomen (cytoreductive surgery) with drug treatment. In some patients drug treatment is given first and surgery follows. After drug treatment, maintenance treatments may be used, especially in patients with a BRCA change. In very early disease, fertility-sparing surgery may be considered for selected young patients who wish to have children.
- Cytoreductive surgery
- Drug treatment before or after surgery
- Maintenance treatment in selected patients
- Fertility-sparing surgery in selected early cases
The tumour board decides which methods are used and in what order. The treatment plan is determined after a physician’s examination and assessment of your tests.

Frequently asked questions
Why does an experienced centre matter?
In ovarian cancer the completeness of surgery is one of the most important parts of treatment, so surgery by a gynaecological oncology team is recommended.
Why is genetic testing done?
Gene changes such as BRCA affect the choice of treatment and matter for relatives too; testing is planned with genetic counselling.
Which documents should I send?
The pathology report, CT/MRI/PET-CT reports and, if possible, the images themselves, operation and discharge reports, blood tests and your medication list.
Can you give any assurance about the outcome?
No. No institution can guarantee the result of cancer treatment. Your physician will explain expectations and risks for your situation openly.
How is the cost determined?
It depends on the tests required and on the type and length of treatment. An itemised written quote follows the physician’s assessment.
